My blog for our alternative walk yesterday.
Inveroran Hotel to Tyndrum
Our scheduled high walk for Sunday was Beinn Odhar (a Corbett at 901m), near Tyndrum, but the weather had other ideas and had to make the decision to cancel due to the heavy rain, boggy paths, high winds, and no visibility. Obviously a bit disappointing but we had to think “safety first”!
One of our other walks was the section of the WHW from Bridge of Orchy back to Tyndrum, so although we could have joined this walk, an alternative back up plan was the order of the day, and after discussing a possible plan with the group they were happy to start the walk from the Inveroran Hotel instead and add the extra short section of the WHW. I asked the nice bus driver if it was possible for him to drive us that little bit further and he was happy to oblige.
So 11 of us headed off uphill from the Hotel a very short distance on the very wet Old Military Road to visit the Mam Carraigh cairn which had superb views over Loch Tulla and towards the peaks of the Black Mount as well as the Beinn Dorain range. We decided to have a pit stop for a quick snack just as the heavens opened so we didn’t linger long and quickly headed off as the rain stopped and continued the zig-zag downhill path to reach the bridge at the back of the Bridge of Orchy Hotel. From there we crossed the busy road, and continued up towards the underpass at the Railway station to join the section back to Tyndrum. The path on this section widens and undulates and had great views across to Glen Orchy. It also offered some close up of the surrounding mountains, which was covered with low mist above us as we skirted along beneath the steep sides of Beinn Dorain.
We found a very nice sheltered area to get out of the wind, on the grassy banks of a downstream burn to have our lunch stop, before heading off again following the river, through the railway underpass, with a short hike up the rocky path, and then downhill again along beneath Beinn Odhar, and our last mile to finish our hike at the Green Welly, where we enjoyed a well-earned nice warm cuppa and of course a bit of cake.
Although the weather was mixed, everyone did enjoy their alternative 14.8km leg stretch 😉
